What’s the origin of the “poison apple”?

Tomatoes are native to western South and Central America, and were first used as food in Mexico. It is speculated they were brought to western Europe by the Spanish conquistadors. In Spain, they were considered poisonous for a long time, but it appears they may have been held responsible for lead poisoning resulting from the high lead content in the plates used by Spanish aristocracy at the time.
